Retired people on pushbikes

Retirement isn’t the end of something. It’s actually the start of something new.

It’s time to travel, enjoy the grandkids, volunteer, take up that hobby you never had time for… and maybe, just maybe, grow in ways you didn’t expect.

You could write that book, take up painting, or golf. But how about something different, something fulfilling and unexpected? ... Public speaking!

Yes, really. Because public speaking isn’t only for boardrooms and career climbers. It’s for everyone who wants to communicate better, connect with others, stay mentally agile, and share a lifetime of stories and wisdom.

At Miranda Toastmasters, we see it all the time: people who join later in life and discover a whole new spark.

Why Toastmasters Works So Well in Retirement

1. Mental Fitness That Feels Fun and Keeps you Young

We talk a lot about physical fitness in retirement, but what about cognitive fitness?

Preparing and delivering speeches keeps your mind active through:

  • Planning structure
  • Choosing words
  • Recalling stories
  • Listening critically
  • Giving feedback

2. Confidence That Spills Into Every Area of Life

Want to speak up at a community meeting? Share a few words at a family birthday? Volunteer to lead a group?

Toastmasters gives you the confidence and clarity to do all that, and more. You’ll build poise, presence, and the ability to express yourself with ease.

3. Social Connection With Purpose

Sadly, for some people retirement can be a little lonely.

Toastmasters is a community. You’ll meet people of all ages and all backgrounds, share experiences, and work on something meaningful together.

There’s lots of laughter, great storytelling, mentoring support, and a genuine sense of belonging. It’s connection with direction.

4. A Place to Share Your Wisdom

You’ve lived. You’ve learned. You have stories worth telling.

Toastmasters is a platform for those stories. You’ll inspire younger members, spark important conversations, and feel the value of your voice being heard.

Many people say they wish they started Toastmasters earlier. It’s never too late.

But What If I’m Nervous?

That’s perfectly normal. We’ve all been there. Almost all members come to their first meeting unsure if they even belong. They soon realise:

  • You’re never too old to try something new.
  • Everyone’s learning, together.
  • You don’t have to be a natural speaker—you just have to show up.

There's no judgment, just support.

A Few Common Myths … Busted

“I’m not looking to climb the career ladder anymore.”

Perfect. You don’t need to be. Toastmasters helps with everyday speaking; family, friends, volunteering, storytelling. It’s not about chasing titles; it’s about expressing yourself.

“It’s probably full of young professionals.”

There’s a wonderful mix of ages at Miranda Toastmasters, and they’re all excited to hear each other’s stories. Sharing your life experience can make great speeches.

What Members Say

What I love most about Toastmasters is the environment, it’s supportive, encouraging, and genuinely focused on helping everyone grow. The feedback you get is always balanced it highlights what you did well and gives you really helpful tips to improve without ever feeling overwhelming. The team atmosphere makes such a difference too. Everyone’s there to lift each other up, celebrate progress, and make sure you leave each meeting feeling a little bit braver and a little bit better.

What You’ll Actually Do at Toastmasters

  • Speak (when you’re ready)
  • Listen to others
  • Take on small roles at the start, like timer or um & ah counter, then take on greater roles as your confidence builds
  • Get and give constructive feedback in a positive way
  • Learn from experienced speakers
  • Smile and laugh … often

There’s no pressure to speak at your first meeting, but we’ll always encourage you to take the leap.
