Toastmasters helping people for 100 years

August 15, 2025 in Blog posts

Toastmasters has been around for over a century, but it is anything but outdated.

Founded in 1924 by Ralph C. Smedley, the very first club began in a YMCA basement in California.

What started as a small group of people wanting to improve their public speaking skills has grown into a global organisation with more than 300,000 members across over 15,000 clubs in 149 countries.

The purpose of Toastmasters is simple. It helps people become more confident speakers, communicators and leaders. Whether you want to present better at work, speak at community events, or just feel more comfortable talking to a group, Toastmasters provides a place to learn and practise in a supportive environment.

Why Toastmasters is Still Relevant

The organisation has kept up with the times. You can attend meetings in person or online*, and members have access to digital resources, interactive learning paths, and even Ai-powered feedback tools. The program is flexible enough to suit different goals and schedules, while still sticking to a structure that has proven effective for decades.

The world has changed a lot in 100 years, but the need to speak with confidence has grown. Clear communication is essential in almost every area of life, and Toastmasters offers a practical, affordable way to build that skill.

How Members Benefit

Members come from all walks of life, and are all ages, but many join for the same reasons:

  • To feel more confident speaking in front of others
  • To improve communication skills for work or community involvement
  • To practise leadership in a safe and encouraging space
  • To think and respond quickly in unexpected situations
  • To meet people and build a professional and personal network

A typical meeting includes prepared speeches, short impromptu speaking exercises (aka Table Topics), and constructive feedback. Everything is designed to help people improve step by step.

More Than Just Public Speaking

While public speaking is the main focus, members often discover they are learning other skills too. Taking on meeting roles helps with organisation and time management. Giving and receiving feedback develops listening skills. Participating in discussions and projects builds teamwork.

Some members take it a stop further and compete in speech contests, including the International Speech Contest, where winners could ultimately compete in the World Championship of Public Speaking, which attracts participants from around the world each year. While not everyone chooses to compete, these events are inspiring and show what is possible with consistent practice.

Why You Should Try a Meeting

Dip a toe in and find out what happens at a Toastmasters meeting. You don’t need to commit straight away. We welcome guests to attend for free for three meetings before deciding whether to join.

There is no requirement to speak at your first meeting if you do not want to. You can simply watch, listen and see how it works. But we will encourage to you dive in … after all, that’s why you’re there.

The cost of membership is far less than most public speaking courses, and because Toastmasters is run by volunteers, the focus is always on helping members succeed rather than selling expensive programs.

The Environment Matters

One of the reasons Toastmasters works so well is the supportive atmosphere. Everyone is there for the same reason: to improve.

Mistakes are seen as part of the process, not something to be embarrassed about. Feedback is always constructive and aimed at helping you get better, not tearing you down.

You will see people at all stages of their journey. Some will be speaking in public for the very first time, while others will be experienced presenters looking to refine or maintain their skills. This mix creates a learning environment where people help each other grow.

A Century of Impact

Over the past 100 years, millions of people have benefited from Toastmasters. Many say it has been life-changing, not just for their speaking ability but for their self-confidence overall. For some, it has opened career opportunities. For others, it has simply made everyday communication easier and less stressful.

The structure, the learning paths, and the global network of clubs mean that no matter where you live, there is a club that fits you.
